The research center was established in October 2006, as the public finance and economics featured base of the teaching and research in the domain of health care economics and administration, and the effective platform for communication between domestic and foreign frontier theories, researches in health policies and management, researchers, policy-makers, and administrators in healthcare service industry.
Staff: An academic committee made up by the research center and research leaders from joint research units will give instructions on research direction for the center, with Professor Yu Wei, Dean of the School of Public Economics and Administration of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, holding the post of the Chairman in the academic committee. The full-time research team has 15 staff by now including teachers in the School of Public Economics and Administration, and researchers from the university’s other disciplines such as economics, statistics and management, and international business administration etc., with professor Li Hua as the Director, associate professors Liu Feng and Shen Wei as the Deputy Directors. The center also has a collaborative research team membered by over 10 researchers from joint research units, co-hosting a variety of academic activities such as lectures and forums in cooperation with the core staff. The center is also supported by the associate research team made of a number of MD-PhD students and MPA students of hospital management, which supplies the center with a team of on average 20 student researchers yearly.
Students: focused on contemporary theories of Healthcare economics and administration, the center recruits post-doctoral and MD-PhD students in the Specialty of Public economics and policy (direction of health care economics and policies), and post-graduate students in the Specialties of social medical and health enterprise management – health policies and administration, medical insurance, and hospital management. Now under the students’ theoretical and empirical research works led by their teachers in the field, the center has developed four major research directions which are: health economics, health policies and administration, health security, and hospital management.
Achievements: core members of the center has published a number of academic papers on a list of top international journals such as “Journal of American Medical Association”, “Medical Care”, “Health Economics”, “Health Policy”, and a number of authoritative periodicals in China such as “Social Sciences in China”, “Economics Research”, and “Study of Political Science”. Members also participate in numbers of international and domestic research projects which include: the China-Austria Health project by the Ministry of Health, National Sub-project of Social Science, the Natural Science Foundation of China, Social Science Foundation of the Ministry of Education, and the “Shanghai Huangpu River Elites” Planning Foundation of Social Science.
Cooperative organizations / Events: Stanford University, China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), Peking University, Renmin University of China, Fudan University, Shanghai Academy of Social Science, Health Development Center of Shanghai etc., and with which organizations the center has successfully hosted academic meetings such as the “ Shanghai Health Policy Forum” and “Round-table Conference of Health Policies in Shanghai”, and delivered speeches at top international conferences such as the “Conference of World Health Economics” , constantly playing an active part in the domestic and international domain of health economics and administration.
