1. Background of Subject Establishment
Real estate industry is a very young industry in China, only over 20 years long since it developed to an individual industry. The lively trend of development of real estate industry so far absolutely matches the China’s economy growth phase. However, the teaching research of China real estate industry cannot match its position of pillar industry. The development of China real estate hasn’t merged into the economic globalization. Economic globalization brought China real estate industry huge market opportunities, space of development, and violent competition and challenge as well. Under the background of economic globalization, the features of the development of real estate industry appearing as followed: the China real estate industry market will be the hot point of international investment; China real estate financial market will connect to international capital market; traditional China real estate development model will be transferred to international real estate operation model; China real estate enterprise will welcome the global competition. Therefore, the requirement of real estate professionals changed under the background of economic globalization, which is that real estate professionals need to turn their shadow view and their super facial understanding of areal market and traditional development model to the international localization view. They also need to possess the comprehensive basic knowledge and special skills in one part in the real estate industry.
2. Development History of this Academic Discipline
In 1995, Real Estate Operation and Management Program was set in the university.
In 1999, Ministry of Education adjusted and combined the Academic Contents, so the program paused.
In 2002, the university began to enrolled students of Business Administration Program and Real Estate Operation and Management (Chinese and foreigners) which was the start of Real Estate Operation and Management (Chinese-foreign cooperation program).
In 2006, the university restarted the program.
We paid much attention to the establishment of this program since it has been set. An academic pacesetter team consisting of Professor Wang Hongwei and Professor Yao Linzheng was formed. What’s more, this program had good reputation among Shanghai discipline program assessment. Professor Yao hosted several consultancy and research projects relating to housing security policies of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of premises and Ministry of Construction, which contributed much to policies enacted by the country. Because of the concern, support and assistant of leaders of our university and several other departments, SPEA held the 13th Asia Real Estate Annual Conference successfully in July, 2008, Shanghai, which won agreement and appreciation from representatives who attended the conference and from the public. That was the second time that the conference had been held in mainland China and Tsinghua University held the conference last time. The conference has great reputation in the world, so that success also proved that the real estate discipline in SHUFE was also known by the world to some degrees. As one of the academic pacesetters in this discipline, President Wang Hongwei is an influential person in the field of world real estate research, which represents the comprehensive power of this discipline in SHUFE.
3. The course system is connected closely to the training scheme in Heriot-Watt University, UK
Heriot-Watt University, UK, is a well-known modern technology university and was evaluated as first class engineering research unit in Scotland by Royal Engineering Association in December, 1996. School of Architecture and Environment of Heriot-Watt University possesses top Research Center of Architecture and Environment and its scientific research ability is in the leading place in UK, as well as the faculty power, which won approval in the world. In December, 1996, School of Architecture and Environment won the first place in the field of architecture and environment in REA, UK. By cooperating with Heriot-Watt University, our program of Real Estate Operation and Management will improve the overall quality in using internationally first class teaching resources. On the other hand, we must consider the connection of different courses taught in SHUFE and Heriot-Watt University when we designed the training scheme, in order to guarantee the “two plus one plus one” teaching mode (Students of Real Estate Operation and Management ought to complete first two years’ basic courses in SHUFE, and students meeting the requirement of studying abroad will be sent to Heriot-Watt University to complete the third year study of major courses and professional practice. Then they will come back SHUFE to complete the rest of the program and finish the degree essay. Credits got in both universities will be approved as valid by these two universities and students passed the exams will be awarded certificates) to be implemented smoothly.
