In the afternoon of 13th May, the 19th Science & Humanity Forum was held in Meeting room 302, Phoenix Building. Professor Zhuang Guoshun is the director of Atmospheric Chemistry Research Center of Fudan University and Plan Executive Committee member of International Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study. He was invited to give the report of “Remove the Haze, Uncover the Sunshine——Reasons and Counterplans for the Lasting and Wide-ranged Haze in Middle and Eastern China” for students and university staff. SPEA Secretary of general Party branch, Shen Hui attended the symposium. Vice secretary of the Party branch Fang Hui in SPEA hosted the symposium.

Professor Zhuang started from the severe and wide-ranged haze appeared in middle and eastern China recent years and pointed out that PM 2.5 has already been considered as the key factor causing China’s air pollution. In addition, he precisely introduced the cause of formation of haze, which is that whether do four decisional factors leading to haze exist in atmosphere: organic aerosol, sulfate, nitrate and black carbon.
As the scholar who devoted himself long time to the investigation of China Atmosphere and atmospheric particulates, especially PM 2.5, Professor Zhuang elaborated the main causes and formation mechanism for triggering the haze in several areas. He also put forward specific measures and effective shortcut to improve the atmosphere quality rapidly.

During the process of popularizing natural scientific knowledge, Professor Zhuang gave more attention to delivering humanism to the audience. He reflected in the perspective of natural scientist on the problem of environment and society and raised the philosophical thought of controlling the atmosphere pollution. He mentioned that human beings ought to live harmonious with nature and deal with the relationship between human beings and nature, development of science and human culture, development of economy and environment protection, past, now and the future.
“Scientific research not only comes from an individual’s interest in investigating the secrets of nature. Scientists ought to take the social responsibility to bring benefits to society ultimately.” The report showed us that Professor Zhuang, a scholar, has a strong sense of social responsibility, realistic scholarship attitude and active mental state. Students were impressed by those qualities he possesses. He also encouraged students to devote themselves in terms of improvement of environment, harmony of society and progress of human culture.
