In the afternoon of 28th November, Professor Ma Jun’an of Tianjing University was invited to be the speaker of our series event, Science & Humanity Lecture and gave students the report of “Of Chemistry”. The report took place in the amphitheater lecture theater of the administration building and hosted by Fang Hui, Vice secretary of general Party branch of SPEA. College counselors and over 80 students attended this event.
Professor Ma teaches organic chemistry in Chemistry Department of Tianjin University and he is the supervisor of doctoral students. As the excellent talent in new century of Ministry of Education and specialist supported by national government, he once was reported in a top international chemistry journal. The open video course "Of Chemistry: Invention and Revelation" was popular among students.
In the report, Professor Ma began from the origin of modern chemistry focusing on three main themes, which were "Can Chemistry Help Humans Being Alive Forever?", "Pesticide: Angel or Demon?", "Do We Need Food Additives”. Students had a thorough understanding of chemistry through his precise and vivid explanation. Meanwhile, Professor told the audience many short stories about chemistry invention. In this way, students’ interests were brought up and they began to know that science was born from hundreds of times’ failures and innovation of physical science needs careful observation, while that of social science needs deep thinking.
At last, Professor Ma communicated with students in terms of some hot topics such as discovery and research of new medicine and the affects and harm brought by food additives. This report was like a journey that students know more about chemistry as well as the scientific spirit.
